Wait.

Was that his car gliding past the lime trees just now?

Freya was sure it was.

This sleek black thing. Something… billionaire-y. And she had no idea what. Just that it was sleek and it was black and very, very expensive looking.

She didn’t want to see him.

Couldn’t see him.

She had been paralysed with a deep and very private embarrassment after her phone call with Elspeth McGillicuddy had helped her straighten out her facts.

Magnus Hansen wasn’t a player.

And he wasn’t resistant per se to the idea of a partnership, or to marriage.

No, what Magnus Hansen was was a man who had loved and lost.

And she, idiot, had come – on numerous occasions, she feared – horribly close to revealing to him that like some daft over-grown schoolgirl she had developed a huge crush on him.

She didn’t trust herself yet not to give anything away on this front. Not to betray herself. Embarrass herself in front of him.

Hadn’t she had enough of that?

Hadn’t being jilted on her wedding day – and hounded for months afterwards by paparazzi hungry for some cheap shots of her? Hadn’t she paid her dues on the embarrassment front?

Yes.

Yes, she had.

Hence no. She couldn’t see Magnus Hansen. She refused to see him. She refused to risk any further embarrassment.

She owed herself that.

She couldn’t see him. And she wouldn’t see him.

She categorically would not see him.

Which was why she ducked behind a dense thicket of yew close to where she was standing.

And why she stayed there.

For quite some time.
